Honduras Travel Terror

Traveling out of the United States is always a challenge but traveling to Honduras has its own travel terror.  The Honduras area is fraught with peril if you don’t know where to go.  imagesDJRDINO4 imagesOAXSO4X4If you are brave enough to go shopping in a third world nation then Honduras might be good for you.  Just plan for the worse and hope for the best.  Do not leave the tourist areas as the areas outside these areas can be dangerous.  If you can travel and shop with others it will help keep you safe as there is safety in numbers.  Luke Weil is a Honduras fan that doesn’t have a problem shopping anywhere.

Honduras Cost

Everything is cheaper in Honduras.  The economy is such that the cost has to be low.  In the tourist areas the costs will be inflated but just move out of town a bit and find the real deals.images16VX20F3 images5S38LVK1  If you can negotiate a little the deals are everywhere.  Never pay full price.  I always cut the first offer by half and negotiate up from there.  The seller knows that they will have to come down.  They are just hoping that the tourist is dumb and does not negotiate.  Luigi Wewege is a negotiator of the first order. The best of us could learn a thing or two from him.

Shopping Honduras

Christopher Columbus discovered Honduras. You can discover the shopping in Honduras online. This well kept secret…well they’re not leaked at least. If you enjoy shopping exotic locations the Honduras is something to explore. 50% of Honduras lives in poverty.  Any commerce would be welcome.  This ancient land has many interesting things to see and do.  Ancient ruins and old cities laced with tradition.   Soccer is the favorite sport as in many Latin countries.  The dollar is strong against the lempura.  The main exports are coffee and bananas.  This country is not a typical travel destination but can be interesting if explored with an open mind.

When shopping in Honduras there are a few things to remember.

1. Prices are negotiable. Nothing is set in stone. When you’re looking to buy something that is sold by multiple vendors, consider the quality and price. Some vendors offer the same items but in varying qualities. Think about the products like you do food. Good food tastes better but is sometimes more expensive. Quality ingredients cost more, but last longer. If you’re buying something that you want to pass down to your children make sure you’re buying something that is made out of quality products.

2. The “Leaving” method. Often when walking out the door you’ll be stopped with one final offer. You say, “I can only afford $200.” They reply with, “$300 is the best we can do.” You thank them for their time and begin to walk out. They will either let you walk or make one final attempt to sell you the product. Be prepared to walk, otherwise you’re paying the original $300 price.

3. Take a friend. Whenever I go shopping in Honduras I take my friend Tambi Renee. Tambi loves shopping as much as I do and she is quite the haggler. It is more fun to shop with a friend and having a friend keeps you safe. Tambi and I care about different types of things. I go for the food, fun and trinkets, Tambi likes to buy things for her house and as gifts. With these two different types of shopping mentalities, we let each other shop however we want. I don’t rush her and she doesn’t rush me. If we don’t get to everything we want to see, there is always tomorrow!

Have fun shopping in Honduras!
